Simulated Job Interview — Interviewee Guide
The Job
You are applying for a job as an Account Manager at Bird Food Express.
Bird Food Express delivers bird food to customers on a regular schedule.
As an Account Manager, you would help make sure customers are happy. You might:
- Talk with customers and answer questions.
- Handle complaints.
- Solve delivery problems.
- Make sure customers get what they ordered.
- Help keep customers coming back to Bird Food Express.
You don’t need to know everything about bird food!
The interviewer is mostly trying to find out how you think, communicate, solve problems, and work with other people.
Before Your Interview
Take a minute to think about these questions.
1. What are you good at?
Think about school, sports, clubs, hobbies, games, volunteering, or other activities.
Examples:
- I’m good at explaining things.
- I’m organized.
- I like helping people.
- I’m good at solving problems.
- I stay calm when things go wrong.
- I work well with other people.
2. Why might you enjoy this job?
There are many possible answers!
Maybe you:
- Like working with people.
- Enjoy solving problems.
- Like helping customers.
- Enjoy organizing things.
- Like working as part of a team.
3. Think of a time you helped someone.
It doesn’t have to be a job!
It could have happened:
- At school
- On a sports team
- At home
- In a club
- While helping a friend
Be ready to explain what happened, what you did, and what happened afterward.
How to Answer Questions
You don’t have to give a perfect answer.
A good answer usually has three parts:
1. What happened?
Briefly describe the situation.
2. What did you do?
Explain your actions.
3. What happened next?
Explain the result or what you learned.
For example:
“My teammate was having trouble with a project. I asked what they needed help with, and we worked through it together. We finished the project on time, and I learned that asking questions first can save a lot of time.”
Some Questions You Might Be Asked
The interviewer may ask:
- Tell me about yourself.
- Why would you like this job?
- What does good customer service mean to you?
- Tell me about a time you helped someone.
- Tell me about a time you worked on a team.
- What would you do if an unhappy customer called?
- What would you do if a delivery went wrong?
- What would you do if you disagreed with a teammate?
- What is one of your strengths?
- What is something you are working to improve?
There are no magic answers.
The interviewer wants to see how you think.
A Customer Problem
The interviewer may give you a situation like this:
A customer calls and says their bird food delivery didn’t arrive. They are angry and say they are going to cancel their subscription. What would you do?
Think about:
Listen → Stay calm → Understand the problem → Find a solution → Follow up
You might say:
“First, I would let the customer explain what happened. I would apologize for the problem and check what happened with the delivery. Then I would work with the delivery team to find out how quickly we could get the bird food to the customer. I would also make sure to follow up with the customer.”
You don’t have to use those exact words!
Questions You Can Ask the Interviewer
At the end of the interview, the interviewer may ask:
“Do you have any questions for me?”
Try to have at least one question ready.
You could ask:
- What is a typical day like for an Account Manager?
- What do you like about working at Bird Food Express?
- What makes someone successful in this job?
- Is there a delivery team, or does the account manager do the deliveries?
- What is the biggest challenge in this job?
Asking a question shows that you are interested in the job.
