📸 The Big Idea
Imagine you are thinking about buying a small business.
The owner says: “This business has $10,000 worth of stuff!”
Sounds pretty good, right?
But then you discover that the business owes $6,000 to the bank.
So how much of the business really belongs to the owner?
That’s where a balance sheet comes in.
A balance sheet is like a financial snapshot. It shows what a business owns, what it owes, and what is left for the owner at a particular point in time.
🧩 The Three Pieces
There are three important words to know:
ASSETS = What the business OWNS
Examples: cash, equipment, inventory, vehicles
LIABILITIES = What the business OWES
Examples: loans, unpaid bills, money owed to suppliers
EQUITY = What belongs to the OWNER after debts are paid
The basic equation is:
ASSETS − LIABILITIES = EQUITY
Or, in the traditional balance-sheet format:
ASSETS = LIABILITIES + EQUITY
That’s why it’s called a balance sheet—the two sides have to balance.

1. What does Maya’s business own?
Find at least three assets in the table.
2. What does Maya’s business owe?
Find the two liabilities.
3. Here’s the mystery number:
The business has $10,000 in assets and $5,000 in liabilities.
How much is left for Maya?

It does!
🤔 Entrepreneur Challenge
Now imagine Maya wants to buy another $2,000 piece of equipment.
She has two choices:
A. Pay for it with money the business already has.
B. Take out a $2,000 loan.
What would happen to the balance sheet with each choice?
Talk it over with your group.
Bonus question: Which choice would make you more comfortable if you were thinking about buying Maya’s business? Why?
🎯 What Entrepreneurs Should Remember
A balance sheet answers three simple questions:
🏪 What do we OWN? → Assets
💳 What do we OWE? → Liabilities
👤 What’s LEFT for the owner? → Equity
And remember:
Assets − Liabilities = Equity
A business can have lots of valuable stuff and still owe a lot of money. That’s why entrepreneurs need to look beyond “How much stuff do we have?”
They also need to ask:
“How much of it do we actually own?”
